Tooth Extraction

We call extraction the artificial removal of milk teeth and secondary dentition from the jawbone. Milk teeth that remain in their places must be removed too to provide enough space for the secondary teeth. A common procedure is the removal of the wisdom teeth.

• Aim: The removal of damaged, decayed teeth or teeth that have recurring problems like pulpal inflammation, osteoperiostitis, periosteitis or suppuration and in case of extra or impacted teeth.
• What to do prior treatment: Tooth extraction is always preceded by dental examination. Taking an x-ray is necessary, on which it can be clearly seen if a simple tooth extraction or surgical tooth extraction is necessary. It is advised to eat before every dental treatment, because it is recommended not to eat after treatment until the numbness lasts, which is usually for 3-4 hours after the injection.

 

• Tooth Extraction:
  • It`s done in local anesthesia. After the dentist is sure the surrounding area is numb they remove the tooth. If the tooth was inflamed, the inflamed tissue remaining in the wound must be removed too. After the procedure the patient must bite on an antiseptic gauze for 10 minutes. When the bleeding is stopped the patient can leave.
• Surgical Tooth Extraction:
  • In many cases a tooth can`t be removed with simple tooth extraction in which case surgical extraction must be performed. Such cases are: if the crown or the neck of the tooth is damaged by decay (the tooth will break if the dentist tries to use force) or if it is visible on the x-ray that the root of the tooth is splayed or curved. In some cases of impacted wisdom tooth, canine tooth or upper molar it’s visible on the x-ray that the root of the tooth is too close to the maxillary sinus so it’s probable that the sinus will open.
  • operation: The treatment is done in local anaesthesia. A gingival flap is made by cutting the gum, the bone is removed around the root and the tooth is pulled out. The inflamed tissue in the wound is also removed. The jagged edge of the bone is smoothed. Finally, the surgical surface is closed with stiches. After the procedure the patient must bite on an antiseptic gauze for 10 minutes. When the bleeding is stopped the patient can leave.
  • what to do after tooth extraction: If micro leakage occurs, the patient must bite on a sterile gauze. It is forbidden to suck on the wound or to rinse the mouth with water as it can cause bleeding. From the following day the wound must be cleaned very carefully when brushing teeth. Fomentation, warming it with pillow is forbidden. The swelling must be chilled with a cold pack from the outside! Consumption of milk or dairy products is not advised for a few days. In case an upper tooth was removed avoid nose blowing, hard physical work and bending for a few days. Take painkillers if necessary and antibiotics only how your doctor prescribes it. The stiches will be removed in 5-7 days.
